BRETHAUER WALTER J. Age 92, of Ross Township, on Wednesday, November 6, 2013. Born in Troy Hill, Pittsburgh, PA, on November 7, 1920, he was the son of the late Walter C. and Hildegard (Dietrich) Brethauer. Also preceded in death by one brother, the late Louis Brethauer. Loving husband for 67 years of Martha (Eayre) Brethauer; beloved father of Jill M. (David Samuel) Brethauer, Charles D. (Paula) Brethauer, and Janet L. (Joseph) Conroy; proud grandfather of Andrew Brethauer, Brian Conroy, and Chris Apperson; and great- grandfather of Riley Apperson; also survived by his beloved cat and friend, Tony. A graduate of Perry High School and the Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. in Forestry, Walter went on to work as a timber cruiser and sawmill manager, ultimately operating Brethauer Lumber Co. in Allison Park for many years. After a career change, he designed and installed closed circuit TV and AV systems until his retirement in 1987. A conscientious objector during WWII, Walter volunteered for the American Field Service and served as an ambulance driver in North Africa, Italy, and India, and remained active with AFS his entire life, especially with the AFS international exchange program. He was an active member for 60 years and a former lay leader of Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church, North Side. Walter had many interests and hobbies, particularly auto mechanics and BMW racing, traveling both U.S. and abroad, and mostly enjoyed family gatherings and time spent with his dear family. Friends are invited to a celebration of Walter's life on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church, 416 W. North Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15212. Family will welcome friends at the church beginning at 10 a.m. until time of service, in addition to time following services.
