HERD CHARLES W. “CHICK” Of East Pittsburgh and North Braddock, recently of Donegal, age 84, on Saturday, December 21, 2013. Beloved husband of Mary Jane (Morgan) Herd for 60 years; loving father of Daniel W. (Carrie) Herd of Stow, OH, Shelly (Al) Muner of North Huntingdon, Charles J. "Chickie" Herd of Donegal, Patty Aponte of FL, and Eileen (Darren) Powell of Carlisle; dear grandfather of Melissa (Brian) Kuentz, Zach Herd, Holly and Beth Rainier, Alexis, Rachel and Morgan Aponte, Matthew and Michael Powell; step-grandfather of Nikki (Mike) Biedrycki and their children, Aubrey and Gabe, and Michael Muner and his daughter, Amelia; brother of the late Joan. Chick was a graduate of St. Thomas High School, Braddock, and earned a basketball scholarship to Duquesne University. Instead of pursuing his education, he became employed at US Steel, Edgar Thomson Plant, before joining the Army and becoming a Korean War veteran. Chick made a career as a Tool and Die Maker at GM's Fisher Body plant in West Mifflin and also volunteered as a basketball coach for many seasons at St. William School in East Pittsburgh. Friends welcome Monday 2-8 p.m. and also on Tuesday morning from 9-10:30 a.m. at PATRICK T. LANIGAN FUNERAL HOME, TURTLE CREEK / MONROEVILLE CHAPEL, 1111 Monroeville Ave. at James St., Turtle Creek 412-823-9350. Mass of Christian Burial in St. William Church of Holy Cross Parish on Tuesday, Christmas Eve, at 11 a.m. Chick will be laid to rest with Military Honors in Braddock Catholic Cemetery.
