SHANABARGER J. LEWIS "JAY" Age 91, passed away at home on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, in Palm Coast, FL, formerly of Dormont for 63 years. Beloved husband for 67 years of Mary Kathryn Sunny Shanabarger; devoted father of Ellen Kay Stucky (Richard) and Janet Susan Smith; brother of the late Betty Ellen Lochner. Jay was born October 15, 1921 in Point Marion, PA, a son of the late Alvin H. and Edna (Miller) Shanabarger. He graduated from Randolph-Macon Academy, Front Royal, VA and attended West Virginia University. A WWII Air Force veteran, Jay served in New Guinea for 4 years and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge with 2 Oak Leaves and the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with 3 Bronze stars. After returning from overseas, he married Mary Kathryn Van Gilder in 1946. He worked at Crucible Steel and J & L Steel Co. until he retired. Jay was past commander of McCormick-Dorman VFW post #694, was a member of the American Legion, was a charter member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Fraternal Order of Elks Lodge # 2213. In addition, he was a member of the Dormont Volunteer Fireman Association from 1960-1986 and served as President from 1972-1986. Friends will be welcomed at LAUGHLIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 222 Washington Road, Mount Lebanon SUNDAY 4-7 p.m. Service in the Funeral Home Chapel Monday morning at 11 o'clock.
