QUINN HELEN M. Helen McLaughlin Quinn, 90, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2014. Born in Dilltown, Pennsylvania on September 30, 1923, Helen was the fifth of eight children. While working in a bank, she met Bill Quinn, who went on to become her husband of 25 years. They married in 1949 and moved to Sewickley, Pennsylvania, where they raised their three children and bought the Sewickley News, a store that delivered papers to the entire town, sold coffee for a dime a cup, and provided two generations of young people with their first jobs as news carriers. Although the store was a full-time enterprise for Helen, especially after Bill died in 1975, she played an active role in her community as a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Century Club, and the Presbyterian Church of Sewickley. A tireless advocate for her neighbors and loved ones, she also welcomed people who had no families into her home for meals and the holidays, petitioned the state so that her son Bob could attend a school for children with special needs, and even chased down a purse snatcher who had robbed one of her friends. In 1993, Helen moved to Timonium, Maryland to be closer to her family. Ever industrious, she began a second career at a temp agency where she worked until age 83, became active in a new church, attended classes at the Timonium Senior Center on topics from World War II and the opera to Buddhism, and became a chair yoga enthusiast. She will be remembered for her sense of humor, dignity, work ethic, and deep love for her family. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Richard Rodgers; her son and daughter-in-law, John and Lucia Quinn; her two grandchildren, Will and Emma; her brother, Grant McLaughlin; Rick, Darla, and Ryan Rodgers; Michelle and Lisa Jones; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Robert; and her other brothers and sisters. Donations may be made in Helen's memory to the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation in support of research on schizophrenia (www.bbrfoundation.org). Send condolences at post-gazette.com/gb
