SCRUGGS OTEY M., Ph.D. After a long illness, Dr. Scruggs died on February 14, 2014, at Sherwood Oaks, Cranberry Twp., PA. He was born in Vallejo, CA on June 29, 1929. He grew up in Santa Barbara, CA, and was well-known for his athletic prowess. In 1952, he tried out for the Olympics in the Decathlon. He finished fifth in the trials, leaving him as he put it, “two places from the boat.” Dr. Scruggs graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1951, and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1958. He taught American History at UCSB until 1965. After a stint with the Peace Corps staff in Ecuador and in Washington, D.C., he returned to UCSB. In 1969, he accepted a position at Syracuse University, and taught there until his retirement in 1995. Dr. Scruggs is survived by his wife, Barbara; his sister, Consuelo Devereaux; his son, Jeffrey; daughter-in-law, Robbin Mitchell; and grandchildren, Jack and Ava. Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at 11:30 a.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church, 315 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, and at 3:30 p.m. at Sherwood Oaks, 100 Norman Drive, Cranberry Twp., PA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Professor Otey Scruggs to the Otey and Barbara Scruggs History Fund, to support student and faculty research. Donations may be sent to the Maxwell School at Syracuse University, 200 Eggers Hall, Syracuse, NY 13244. Online donations may be made at the Syracuse University Maxwell School Website.
