
SALTER CATHERINE (BLAKENEY) 95, of Gibsonia, PA, passed away on March 9, 2014, at St. John's Specialty Care Center, after a long illness. She will be fondly remembered by her five children and their families. Catherine Kay was born on October 5, 1918, in Brooklyn, NY, the only child of Carlos Smith Blakeney and Gilbert McKinley Blakeney, and lived her early years in Baltimore, MD. The family then moved to Harrisburg, PA, where Catherine graduated from Harrisburg High School. She attended Duke University as a sociology major and was proud of her role on the university debate team. After two years, she transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, where she graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the Wharton School of Business. On June 22, 1940, she married John Lamberton Salter of Franklin, PA, and they moved to Pittsburgh, PA, where they raised their family. They were active members of St. Thomas in the Fields Episcopal Church for many years. After John's retirement, they had a second home in North Myrtle Beach, SC, where they frequently hosted their children and grandchildren. After 51 years of marriage, John died in 1991, at the age of 78. Catherine is survived by five children, Suzanne Salter Sramek (Thomas) of North Myrtle Beach, SC, Dr. Kathleen Salter Keagy (Blair) of Chapel Hill, NC, Virginia Salter Helgerman of Gibsonia, PA, John Lamberton Salter, Jr. (Susan) of Valencia, PA, and Barbara Salter Wylie (David) of McMurray, PA; also surviving are 12 grandchildren, Thomas, Scott, Julie, Matthew, Kristin, Richard, Kate, Jessica, Luke, Megan, Laura, and Amanda; and 16 great-grandchildren. Catherine will be fondly remembered for the generous care she gave to her friends and family, as well as for her love of reading, knitting, politics, crossword puzzles, and her favorite sports teams. The family is very appreciative of the kind and thoughtful people at St. John's Specialty Care Center who cared for her during her final years. A visitation will be held at SCHELLHAAS FUNERAL HOME in Bakerstown, PA on Friday evening, March 14, 2014, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be led by her grandson, The Reverend Thomas Sramek, Jr., at St. Thomas in the Fields Episcopal Church in Gibsonia, PA at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2014, followed by her burial with John in Franklin, PA.
