WALSH SISTER MAUREEN, CSJ Age 94, died Sunday, May 11, 2014, in Villa St. Joseph, in her 75th year as a Sister of St. Joseph of Baden. The daughter of the late John Joseph and Margaret Ryan Walsh, Sister Maureen entered the Congregation in 1939 from Holy Rosary Parish in Pittsburgh. Sister Maureen ministered as a high school teacher in the Dioceses of Pittsburgh and Altoona- Johnstown, including seven years at St. Joseph High School, Natrona, and four years at St. Canice High School, Pittsburgh. After receiving her Ph.D. in 1964 , Sister Maureen began her ministry as Associate Professor at Carlow University. Following a 30-year tenure as Associate Professor of English, Sister Maureen was named Professor Emeritus. Upon her retirement, the college's Humanities Division established the Sister Maureen Walsh Award for Best Academic Essay. She also served the Congregation as Director of Temporary Professed Sisters from 1963-67. Her love of teaching and joy in sharing her knowledge with her students was reflected in her smile and her pleasant manner. Sister also took delight in singing, particularly songs of her Irish heritage. She retired to the Motherhouse in 2007 and became a resident of Villa St. Joseph in 2013. Sister Maureen is survived by one brother , David of Fayetteville, PA; nieces and nephews, grand- nieces and grand-nephews; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden. Friends will be received Tuesday, May 13, 2014, from 1:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, May 14, 2014, from 11:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sisters' Cemetery on the Motherhouse grounds.
