MARTIN ROGER E. Of Gibsonia, pioneer nuclear engineer, was born on September 19, 1926, in Springfield, Ohio. He passed away, after a lengthy illness, on Saturday, August 10, 2013. Mr. Martin served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from Bucknell University (1949), where he was elected to Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. Mr. Martin was a 43 year employee of Duquesne Light Company. A highlight of his career occurred in December, 1957, when he gave the order to start up the Shippingport Atomic Power Station, the world's first commercial nuclear facility. Mr. Martin leaves his beloved wife of 63 years, Joyce Martin. He also leaves a son, Dr. James Martin, Sr. (Linda); and a daughter, Rev. Dr. Joan Martin Barbour (Jeffrey), both of North Carolina. His family also includes a grandson, James Martin, Jr., Esq.; and a sister, Joyceann Martin Dunlap of Springfield, Ohio. Mr. Martin was a dedicated member of Gibsonia's Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he sang in the choir and taught Sunday School for 30 years. He was an accomplished tenor, who performed with the Mendelssohn Choir for 17 years and later with the Pittsburgh Concert Chorale. Following his retirement from Duquesne Light in 1992, Mr. Martin contributed his time and talents to the Western Pennsylvania Model Railroad Museum in Gibsonia. He also volunteered at the Cranberry Public Library. Visitation will be private.
