FLAHERTY SISTER ROSEMARY (SR. M. RONALD) A Pittsburgh Sister of Mercy for 63 years, died at Mercy Hall, the Convent of Mercy, on August 31, 2013. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, she was 81 years old. Daughter of John and Bridget (Connolly) Flaherty, Sister Rosemary entered the Sisters of Mercy from St. Regis Parish in Pittsburgh, PA in 1950, and made final vows in 1956. Sister Rosemary received a degree in English from Mount Mercy College (now Carlow University) and an MA in English from Duquesne University. She taught at area catholic schools, including St. Peter, McKeesport, Greensburg Central Catholic, Immaculate Conception, Washington, PA, St. Paul Cathedral High School. She also taught at Carlow University in the English Dept. In later years, Sister Rosemary worked in the finance office for the Sisters of Mercy and various departments at Mercy Hospital, including Legal, Finance and Social Services. She also worked at the Pittsburgh Blind Association and the Health Studies Offices for the University of Pittsburgh. Her volunteer activities included Mercy Hospital, Carlow University Learning Center, and letter writing for the prison ministry. Sister Rosemary was an unusually gifted and greatly loved English teacher, who was loved by her students. She was both demanding and supportive, and her students knew her great care. A prolific writer and poet, Rosemary drew on her deep faith, her sharp sense of humor, her curiosity and great understanding of literature and continued to submit articles for publication. She received both academic and civil recognitions through the years. Sister Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, John Flaherty, Jr. and Reverend Kenneth Flaherty, TOR. She is survived by nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Tuesday from 1-8 p.m. at the Convent of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Avenue. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11:00 in the Chapel at the Convent of Mercy, followed by interment in St. Xavier Cemetery, Latrobe, PA. Arrangements entrusted to the EDWARD P.
